5 Life Lessons I’ve Learned From My Daughter

True to all the clichés, becoming a mother really does change your life.  Parenting is challenging and very stressful at times.  Despite the 4 am wake up calls, midnight diaper changes, food spills, and the occasional public meltdown, I am blown away by the amount of absolute joy my daughter brings into my life every single day. She, like all babies, is pure, positive energy.  More than just a little baby, she is an eternal soul, pure Consciousness, that’s eager and excited to take on a fresh perspective.  Watching her smile, laugh, and look around this world in wonder not only makes me happy, it raises my own energy, and allows me to experience love and joy on a whole new level.   And at only 9 months, she has already taught me so many important life lessons: 1. She lives in the moment. She doesn’t waste time and emotional energy thinking about what went wrong yesterday, or worrying about what could go wrong tomorrow.  She lives in the present moment.  I may be absentmindedly rolling a grocery cart through the store, while on my phone, annoyed at having to complete another chore.  My daughter, on the other hand, will squeal with delight as we roll past all the brightly colored fruits and vegetables, and will excitedly pick up a lemon or orange to examine it carefully.  She engages with the world and people around her with such focus, energy, and enthusiasm, that even strangers will take notice and come up to talk to her.  By bringing a positive energy to the present moment, she uplifts everyone around her. 2.  She’s authentic. Unlike adults, who have been socially conditioned to suppress negative emotion, be fake and [...]

Are You Spiritual or Religious?

Reader question of the month:  What’s the difference between spirituality and organized religion?  And, can you be spiritual and religious at the same time? Organized religion (whether it be Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, etc) subscribes to a specific set of principles and dogma, derived from texts and religious figures throughout history (most from thousands of years ago).  Some of these religions have evolved throughout history, and have branched out into many different denominations and sects. Organized religion has many positives:  it can serve as a social and cultural foundation for a community or society, inspire hope, and serve as a moral compass for the masses.  Sometimes getting guidance, leadership, and support from a religious community can be uplifting and provide a sense of belonging and security. Spirituality, or the act of being spiritual, is really coming into the understanding of how Consciousness and energy actually works.  Once you understand that everything is basically energy (and we are just Consciousness in physical form), it allows you to view organized religion from a fresh perspective.  You no longer have to rely on texts written thousands of years ago for a different time and people at a different level of consciousness.  Indeed, almost all of those texts and holy books have been re-written at varying points in history for different political and economic motives.  Instead of arguing about which religion is right, which parts of what texts are still accurate, etc, you begin to realize that Truth is HERE and NOW. What do I mean by that?  I mean that when you begin to meditate and go within, you realize you have access RIGHT NOW to infinite intelligence, guidance, and clarity from your very own Inner Being (or [...]

Is Karma The Same Thing As Law of Attraction?

Reader question: Can you explain the difference between karmic law and law of attraction?  Are they the same thing?   This is a great question!  The word “karma” has, for better or worse, made it into the popular lexicon.  It’s usually used as a way to explain the doling out of divine justice.  As in, if something bad or unexpected happens to you, maybe it was “karma” (payback from the Universe for something you have done in the past).  Conversely, if something good happens, the same definition of a past good deed is usually used (“I must have good karma!”). To make things even more complicated, the Hindu religion (which is where the Sanskrit word karma originates) claims that there is past life karma.  Your good and bad deeds in a past life could contribute to what you are experiencing in this life.  So is this popular definition of karma accurate?  And how do we reconcile it with the Law of Attraction? To put it simply, the biggest difference between what we know about how energy actually operates through the Law of Attraction and the classical definition of karma is this:  your current point of attraction is a direct result of your energy frequency in THIS moment.  It has nothing to do with a past life or past good or bad deeds in this life.  So does this mean that if you could shift your energy frequency in the now moment, that you would be absolved of any past karma?  Basically, yes.  Every frequency, every outcome, every circumstance already exists in billions of difference vibrational realities simultaneously.  You are simply, in any given moment in time, TUNING IN to a specific frequency and its [...]

Why Do We Create Unexpected Obstacles?

Reader Question:  What is the best way to deal with an unexpected obstacle?  Why do unexpected things seem to happen out of the blue?  - R.S., Canada This is actually a great question, and something I’ve been meaning to write an article about for some time.  If we accept and truly believe that everything that comes into our experience is a result of our vibrational output in that moment (the energy frequency we are radiating out), then how can we explain events that seemingly come “out of the blue?”  While the reader above didn’t give a specific example, I can relate to this question myself, as there are many times in my own life when I feel like the unexpected happens- and this is coming from someone that is pretty mindful of her thoughts on a daily basis!  Also, I want to clarify that by unexpected, I don’t always mean negative.  For example, sometimes I’ll find myself dreading a meeting with someone or an event, and it turns out much better than what I was expecting.  Other times, I’m feeling pretty positive and excited about an opportunity and it turns out to be disappointing or not meeting my expectations (for whatever reason).  So, if we get what we think about and what we expect in accordance with our beliefs, how are the above scenarios possible? In cases where the outcome or manifestation seems incongruous with your beliefs and expectations, there are probably a few things going on that might be worth considering: 1.       Are you truly in sync with your emotions?  Sometimes, people have been at a vibrational set point for so long, it doesn’t even register to them as negative emotion anymore.  For example, [...]

You Have To Believe It To See It

As we near the end of 2013, many of us will naturally reflect on the past year.  It’s easy to focus on the big things, either positive or negative, that happened (or didn’t happen).  Once a big promotion or dream job has manifested, it takes very little mental discipline to be excited or happy- it’s easy to feel joy about something great once it’s right in front of you.  Most people, even the negative and cynical among us, can smile when they see a cute baby or a rainbow.  Similarly, our mind will naturally lament and feel regret over all our unfulfilled desires and dreams (“Another New Year’s Eve and I’m still single!” or “Still need to lose those 20 pounds!” are common complaints that I hear this time of the year, and that give people a license to feel sad).  While I think it’s sometimes helpful to take inventory of what worked and what didn’t this year, simply observing “what is” in your life is not what deliberate creation is all about.  If you follow my writing, you know that I always stress that the only way to create the life of your dreams is from the inside out.  What does this mean?  My favorite analogy is that of the mirror.  When you look in a mirror, you intuitively understand that the mirror is simply a reflection of who you are and what you are projecting. If you smile, the mirror automatically smiles.  If you frown, it reflects a frowning image back.  The mirror does not have its own agenda and does not have the ability to reflect back to you anything you are not already putting out there!  Pretty easy to understand so [...]

The Toxic Effect of Guilt

I often use my daily meditation practice as a way to surface any underlying negative emotions and clear any resistance that may be holding my energy vibration down.  The analogy I like to use:  you are naturally like a cork bobbing on the surface of the water – you don’t have to do much to keep the cork floating happily along, because that is its inherent nature.  Negative thoughts and emotions, however, act like a hand that’s holding down the cork.  If you simply release the negative emotion, the cork (and your vibrational frequency) will naturally rise back to your true nature – a state of joy, enthusiasm, and love.  Any emotional state other than this is not only unnatural, but research shows that chronic negative emotion and stress is toxic to our cells and hazardous to our health. So being acutely aware of negative emotion is the first step to recognizing and releasing it.  For this article, I want to focus on a particularly insidious emotion - guilt.  Guilt is one of those tricky emotions that’s hard to pinpoint and even harder to root out.  In its broadest definition, guilt is “an emotion that occurs when a person believes that they have compromised his or her own standards.”  But I’d argue that that definition is not nearly subtle enough for the type of guilt that most people experience (especially women, who in my experience are more prone to obsess and fret than men). For instance, most people might feel guilty about big offenses like stealing, cheating, or lying.  Negative emotion is not always a bad thing if it helps you identify your moral compass and course correct – it’s called having a conscience.  But [...]

Dealing With Online Haters

With more of the world creating and consuming information on the internet, online behavior, etiquette, and the rules of engagement are becoming increasingly complex.  Basically, online etiquette is virtually nonexistent.  Sitting behind an anonymous computer screen, with an anonymous screen name, many people feel empowered to say things in comment boxes, chat rooms and on boards that would never say in real life.  In some ways, this creates open, honest, unfiltered dialogue.  On the flip side, it really brings out the dark side of people where they unleash all their frustration, anger, and even boredom through their keyboards. So what to do if you’re an online writer, blogger, tweeter, or anyone who puts any sort of content out there that people can read and comment on?  These are my top tips for surviving and navigating through the world of online haters: 1.       Don’t take it personally.  This seems like an obvious one, but it’s good to remind yourself that the people that are writing nasty or negative comments probably don’t know you in real life.  They have not put as much thought and effort into their words as you probably have into yours, and aren’t as invested in what they’re saying and how it might be hurting you.  Most people just have a knee-jerk reaction, comment on the first thing that comes to mind and move on.  Also remember that some of these people are bored, and it’s much easier for them to tear someone else down than to do something constructive themselves.  So keep a cool head, your emotions in check, resist the urge to respond, and move on.  2.       Know what you’re getting yourself into.  When you voluntarily post your work, writing, or [...]

When should you take action?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: taking action to achieve a goal, from a place of misaligned energy, is rarely effective.  And that's precisely what's wrong with 99% of the "advice" that's out there about how to achieve success.  They tell you:  Write down your goals!  Do 3 small things every day that will move you towards that goal!  Make a list of action steps!  And my favorite:  Don't forget to network like a champ!! If it were really that simple, why is it that so many people are doing exactly those things, and are not getting the big results they seek?  Or even any results for that matter?  And there are other people who just seem to get a bright idea, rendezvous with the right people at the right time, and things seem to unfold naturally and effortlessly.  I'm certainly not implying that the latter group is not working hard.  But there's a lot more to the equation than just hard work, my friends, or there would be a lot more uber successful people out there.  You've just got to admit it - there's simply more to it than just working hard and "taking action". That's because taking action can either be upstream or downstream.  When you are paddling upstream, you are rowing really hard against a powerful current: no matter how hard you try (and you may make it a ways through sheer determination and physical strength), eventually you will get tired and the much more powerful current will have its way with you (that's what getting beat up by life feels like). When you are paddling downstream, you are going with the flow.  You're in sync with your emotions [...]

My Favorite Tips For Making the Law of Attraction Work For You

1. Act "as if." A recent study showed that the brain waves generated and neurotransmitters released when someone visualizes sitting on a beach (for example) are exactly the same as the brain waves of a person who is actually sitting on that beach. Your mind (and the Universe) doesn't recognize the difference between what you perceive as "real" and "imaginary." It only reads vibration. The easiest way to attract something into your experience is to evoke the FEELING and VIBRATION of already having it, and then hold your attention to that feeling as long as possible, preferably until it becomes second nature. Feeling as if what you want is already here may seem like a exercise in delusion, but remember, reality is pliable. Your physical reality is constantly changing and conforming to the energy frequency you are holding. 2. Role play. When someone recently asked the entertainer Lady Gaga how she became so famous so quickly, she responded, "I knew I was famous even before anyone ever knew me." She would feel, think, and act like people she admired even before the physical manifestation of her own fame. Who are some people that inspire you? Who would you want to be like? It doesn't have to be anyone "famous" - just someone that you admire and has had an impact on you. There are many archetypes for you to choose from. Try to get out of your own head a little bit and think and feel more like the person that inspires you. How would they think about a situation? What would they do? Aside from being a fun exercise, this can help you shift your perceptions and create new energy patterns. 3. Do what [...]

5 Simple Steps To Creating Change

  1. Think a different thought. We all have certain beliefs, expectations, and patterns of thought about certain subjects that seem natural to us, because we have practiced those thoughts for so long. The number one reason it's hard to get out of a rut or create change is because we keep thinking the same thoughts about a given subject. Jolt yourself out of an energy rut by forcing your mind to view things from a different, more favorable perspective, and then try to hold that new perspective for as long as possible. 2. Take a different action. As they say, madness is doing the same thing and expecting different results. If you are wanting something to be different in your life, or just wanting to create some excitement, the change has to start with you first. There are no boring lives, only boring people. So if you want a different result, take a different action, even if it is small one. 3. Come from a place of abundance, not lack. A lot of times, when people want something or someone in their life to be different, they automatically start from a place of negativity and lackfulness, which undermines the change they are hoping to create. "I hate my job, I wish I had a different one" will continue to bring you more experiences that reinforce that same belief. A simple shift to, "I'm grateful for having a job and am in the process of creating an even better one" can be really impactful. This new statement puts you in a more powerful vibrational place of appreciation and hope rather than desperation. Always act as if what you want is already on its way to [...]
